Trends in Funding, Internationalization, and Types of Study for Original Articles Published in Five Implant-Related Journals Between 2005 and 2009

Purpose: The aims of this study were to evaluate the trends in funding, geographic origin, and study types of original articles in the dental implant literature and to investigate the relationships among these factors. Materials and Methods: Articles published in Clinical Oral Implants Research, The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, Implant Dentistry, and Journal of Oral Implantology from 2005 to 2009 were reviewed. Nonoriginal articles were excluded. For each article included, extramural funding source, geographic origin, and study type were recorded. Descriptive and analytic analyses (alpha = .05), including a logistic regression analysis, and chi-square test were used where appropriate. Results: of a total of 2,085 articles published, 1,503 met the inclusion criteria. The most common source of funding was from industry (32.4%). The proportion of studies that reported funding increased significantly over time. Europe represented the highest percentage (55.8%) of published articles. Most of the articles reported on clinical studies (49.9%), followed by animal studies (25.9%). Articles from Asia and South America and animal and in vitro studies were significantly more likely to be funded. Conclusion: Almost half of the original dental implant articles were funded. The trend toward internationalization of authorship was evident. A strong association was observed between funding and geographic origin and between funding and study type. Most studies in North America and Europe were clinical studies and supported by industry, whereas a greater proportion of studies in Asia and South America were in vitro or animal studies funded through government resources. Passado e presente nas relações Colômbia-Estados Unidos: a estratégia de internacionalização do conflito armado colombiano e as diretrizes da política externa norte-americana

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a dinâmica das relações entre Colômbia e EUA, com ênfase no governo de Álvaro Uribe (2002-...). Para tanto, são examinadas a estratégia de internacionalização do conflito armado colombiano e os aspectos da intervenção dos EUA mediante o Plano Colômbia. Como conclusão, o trabalho sugere que as recentes mudanças políticas nos EUA têm causado impacto nas diretrizes das relações das relações entre EUA e Colômbia.

A internacionalização das empresas espanholas

The internationalization of Spanish companies. The purpose of this article is to present the process of (late) internationalization of Spanish companies occurred between the years of 1990 and 2000, its determinants and the degree of involvement of the State in this process. We can point out some determinants in this process, such as: a fall in the profitability of the domestic market, a shrinking of the Spanish market, imminent danger of the acquisition of Spanish companies in the local market due to trade and financial openness. We conclude that this process was not fortuitous. There was a clear perception by the government that this process would not only be relevant but also necessary for the entrance of Spain in the international economic and geo-political set.

O papel das subsidiárias e a internacionalização das atividades tecnológicas pelas Empresas Transnacionais (ETNs)

Este estudo se propõe a analisar os mandatos das subsidiárias de empresas transnacionais (ETNs) no estrangeiro por intermédio dos mecanismos de alocação das atividades de pesquisa e desenvolvimento (P&D) entre os centros descentralizados de pesquisa. Iniciamos o trabalho com a apresentação de uma síntese das diferentes perspectivas encontradas na literatura econômica sobre a subordinação (ou condicionamentos) da autonomia administrativa e tecnológica das filiais. Tal síntese permite estabelecer uma hierarquia entre as subsidiárias e uma tipologia para evolução (retrocesso) de mandatos construída, principalmente, para as ETNs estruturadas em forma de rede corporativa. A seguir, a partir de pesquisas realizadas sobre as atividades dos laboratórios de P&D da indústria de equipamentos de telecomunicações no Brasil, procuramos mostrar que: a) a descentralização das atividades tecnológicas é um fato que não está restrito apenas aos países centrais; b) as tecnologias de informação permitiram que as subsidiárias no país se integrassem aos laboratórios centrais das ETNs, dando-lhes condições de desenvolver e participar de outras atividades tecnológicas, além das tradicionais funções de adaptação de processo e de produtos.

Sustainability and CDM projects in the Brazilian sugar cane sector: a discussion on the economic-financial aspects

The study discusses how the revenue from the sale of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) can contribute to the attractiveness of investment in projects of bagasse-based cogeneration. It was observed that revenue from CERs is probably not enough to make these investments acceptable in the economic and financial aspect. However, this study speculates that Clean Development Mechanism projects will be strategic to build a positive image concerning the social responsibility and sustainability of the business in the Brazilian sugar cane sector.

O Agronegócio e o problema do trabalho infantil

This article attempts to identify and analyze the motives that led several sectors of agro-business to engage in the struggle for the eradication of child labor in Brazil, as launched by international organizations for the defense of children's and adolescents' rights. It is our hypothesis that economic globalization and the internationalization of children's rights have given visibility to the problem of child labor, thus demanding the mobilization of entrepreneurial sectors linked to agro-business productive chains in Brazil. The article is divided into four inter-related sections. In the first one, we attempt to provide evidence for the interference of social and labor problems within the ambit of the economic activities of the agro-business sector, within the current context of globalization. This is followed by a study of major UN, UNICEF and ILO investments to internalize children's rights and policies to combat child labor, giving salience to their repercussions in Brazil. In the third section, we analyze strategies adopted by firms linked to agro-business with the purpose of avoiding the use of child labor within their productive chains. Finally, we seek to understand the motivations that have led agro-businessmen to take part in the struggle against child labor. We conclude that firms linked to agro-business took up the project of combating child labor in virtue of the internationalization of children and adolescents' rights, the inclusion of social issues in international markets, the intensification of the fiscalization of public power, the growth of action around entrepreneurial social responsibility and increased consumer consciousness.

This article aims to getting at the recent changes in Brazilian industrial capitalism, especially the expansion of companies and business groups abroad. The analyzed theme is the Votorantim Group, one of the most important groups in the country and Latin America. The Group acts in several branches of the economy and it has recently invested in the acquisition of foreign companies in different business and countries. In this article, the theories of internationalization of companies and business groups and the path of the Votorantim Group are focused - from its origin to productive internationalization. The secondary data were compiled from annual reports of the group, specialized magazines and newspapers.
